It’s time for showdown; Piotr Pustelnik is coming out of retirement – in Polish style! In a late night mail /03:00 am EST Oct 29, 2007 / , Piotr revealed his plans to ExplorersWeb.
The Himalayan Trilogy dream team (Piotr Pustelnik, Piotr Morawski and Peter Hamor) are coming back to Himalayas next spring, and that’s just the beginning! All in all Piotr has climbed 13 main summits and 8000m peaks 16 times.

2008: The north-west face of Annapurna!

“These two incredible guys (Morawski and Hamor) want to join me on Annapurna again.” In early spring 2008, the trio will show up on the slopes of the north-west face of Annapurna.

“We want to repeat the Czech route from 1988 (the expedition led by J. Drlik put J. Nezerka, J. Martis on the summit).

“After acclimatization on Ama Dablam, we will try to complete it in one push. We find this route a bit longer and exposed to the wind, but less dangerous than the classic north face route.”

2008: traverse from G1 to G2 and G3!

“The rest of our plans cover the next three seasons. In the same ( 2008) season – following the climbing spirit and dreams of my mountain guru, Woytek Kurtyka – we want to complete his two ideas: We want to make the long traverse from G1 to G2 and G3 starting via the original (first ascent) American line to G1, then to Gasherbrum La and on the ridge thru Gasherbrum East to G2 and G3.

2009: All Broad Peaks! …and the north-west rigde of Rakaposhi…

“In the next season we want to climb all Broad Peaks; starting from Godwin Austen Glacier and ending on Concordia.”

The last project is the north-west rigde of Rakaposhi.

2006 ExWeb awards

Grabbing the second place in the ExWeb awards last year (topped only by the truth on Nangpa La), the Himalayan Trilogy team outshone everything.

There were rescues of other climbers, and incredible summits, one after the other. The team acclimatized on Cho Oyu, moved to Annapurna; and finally to Broad Peak in Pakistan. There were no porters, no oxygen – just a small band of frends, including an American and a Tibetan climber on Anna.

“Time to sum things up”

Piotr Pustelnik only looked back on his final 8000er, Broad Peak, with bitter-sweet memories. He had summited, but not in the way he had wanted, and he was happy he didn’t have to return, he said.

Still, he had climbed 13 of the worlds tallest – and only one had eluded him: Annapurna. He wrote in his farewell dispatch, “So, it’s the end of our ‘Triptych’, our plan which was rather extraordinary for me – a superb experience at the end of my career in the highest mountains. From a satellite phone in Broad Peak’s base camp, Piotr Pustelnik.”

Not so fast!

Now Piotr has to eat his words. But what is life, if not for living! Folks like Piotr do it best closest to the clouds, on the amazing arena of the Himalayan giants. Win or lose, the battle is golden. Welcome back, Piotr!

Last year, Annapurna was summited only by Peter Hamor and the Kazakh climbers Maxut Zhumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov (from the north side). All in all Piotr has climbed 13 main summits and 8000m peaks 16 times. Rescues have cost him a number of summits but also gained him an award which he commented, “humanly behavior shouldn’t be the subject of awards.”

Piotr Morawski achieved the first winter climb on Shisha Pangma on January 14, 2005. Also on the summit was Italian Simone Moro, who describes Morawski as one of the best Polish climbers today. Piotr Morawski latest summited Nanga Parbat this summer.

Besides Annapurna main, Broad Peak and Nanga Parbat, Slovak Peter Hámor has summited Everest (1998) and climbed “the Alpine Trilogy” the difficult north faces of Matterhorn, Grandes Jorasses and Eiger.

Piotr’s two sons continue the family’s mountaineering legacy – with success. In August last year, Adam and Pawel Pustelnik climbed Ak-Su peak, in Kyrgyzstan. The brothers made a new route on the west face of Ortotyubek (also known as the Central Pyramid or Peak 3850). The resulting 1100 meter-long route was called “Amba” (VI, 7c/c+).

Then, the Pustelniks moved to Slesov (also known as the Russian Tower, 4250m), where they teamed up with Slawek Cyndecki for an on sight ascent of Perestroika Crack (VI, 7b, 1000m).

The “Himalayan Triptych Reactivated” has begun! The team left Warsaw airport this weekend to start the first part of their expedition, i.e. the attempt at a first ever repeat of the Czech route on the north-west face of Annapurna – the tenth highest peak in the world (8091 meters above the sea level).

The Czech route on the north-west face of Annapurna

The aim of the expedition is to repeat for the first time the Czech route on the north-west face of Annapurna – the tenth highest peak of the world (8091 meters above sea level). For Piotr Pustelnik it will also be the chance to finish the Crown of the Himalayas – the fourteen highest mountains in the world rising above 8000 meters. Piotr has already ascended thirteen of them, with Annapurna the only one remaining. So far only thirteen people have managed this quest.

About Annapurna

Despite being one of the lowest eight-thousanders, Annapurna is definitely one of the most dangerous mountains in the world. By the year 2005, only 103 people had reached its summit while 56 have died attempting it.

The Annapurna’s extensive massive consists of six main summits: the main one (8091m) as well as five others rising over 7000m. Interestingly, it was the first eight-thousander ever climbed – by Maurice Herzog and Louise Lachenal on 3rd June 1950. Eight Polish mountaineers have repeated this feat so far:

1987 – Artur Hajzer & Jerzy Kukuczka (first winter ascent)

1991 – Bogdan Stefko, Krzysztof Wielicki, Wanda Rutkiewicz, Ryszard Pawlowski and Mariusz Sprutta

1996 – Andrzej Marciniak

The mBank Expeditions

The mBank Expeditions have already tried to reach the summit three times, including twice (in 2004 and 2005) along the Bonnington’s route on the south face.

In 2006, the “Himalayan Triptych” made up of Piotr Pustelnik, Piotr Morawski (Poland), Peter Hamor (Slovakia) and Don Bowie (USA) focused their efforts on the eastern ridge of Annapurna that had been climbed merely twice before. However, Peter Hamor was the only one to reach the main summit on 21st May while Piotr Pustelnik and Piotr Morawski got as far as the eastern summit (8010m). They turned back to rescue a Tibetan climber afflicted by snow blindness.

2008

This year Piotr Pustelnik decided to return to Annapurna with a tried-and-tested team consisting of himself as the main coordinator, Peter Hamor, Piotr Morawski and Dariusz Zaluski, who will have the double role of a film maker. They have chosen the Czech route (also called “Gabbarrova”) on the north-west face of Annapurna. It has been climbed only once by Nezerka and Martis in 1988.

Ama Dablam – a relatively easy to climb mountain in the Himalaya range of eastern Nepal (6812 metres) – is to be the place for the team’s high altitude acclimatization before their main effort. The expedition sets off on 15th March from Warsaw and will stay acclimatizing on Ama Dablam till mid April. They will then be transported with a helicopter to their base camp beneath the north face of Annapurna. Their return is planned for 7th May.

Piotr Pustelnik has been climbing in the highest mountains since 1985, ascended all but one eight-thousand-meter high peak and has participated in many expeditions in the Himalayas, Karakoram, and all over the world.

Peter Hamor, the best Slovakian mountaineer has ascended five eight-thousanders (two of them as the first ever Slovak).

Piotr Morawski has climbed four eight-thousanders and was the first to ascend Shisha Pangma in winter.

Dariusz Zaluski has climbed four eight-thousanders and has taken part in many winter expeditions; he combines climbing with professional film-making and has authored many award-winning documentaries about the highest mountains of the world.

TRYPTYK REAKTYWACJA

Autor: Piotr Morawski. Nie ulega wątpliwości co będzie naszym podstawowym celem: Annapurna. Której Piotrowi brakuje do Korony Himalajów i już trzykrotnie odrzuciła jego zaloty. Resztę trzeba skomponować: aklimatyzacja przed Anną oraz dopełnienie sezonu (czyli Karakorum, do którego zarzekałem się że szybko nie wrócę, a wracam już trzeci raz). Jako aklimatyzacja – Ama Dablam, potem Annapurna, potem Baltoro i dwa projekty: grań Gasherbrumów od I do III oraz grań Broad Peaków od bazy pod K2 po Concordię. Obydwa trawersy jeszcze nie zrobione do końca, chociaż w większej części pokonane. By wspomnieć tylko rajd Kurtyka-Kukuczka, który po wyruszeniu z bazy pod K2 przeszedł wszystkie 3 wierzchołki Broad Peaku. Zespół nie zszedł wtedy granią do Concordii, tylko drogą normalną. Zostaje nam zatem końcówka na zrobienie…

Tryptyk Reaktywacja, część pierwsza: mBank Annapurna West Face Expedition

Celem wyprawy jest pierwsze powtórzenie drogi czeskiej na północno-zachodniej ścianie Annapurny – dziesiątego co do wysokości szczytu ziemi o wysokości 8091 m. n.p.m., a także ukończenie przez Piotra Pustelnika Korony Himalajów. Do Korony Himalajów zaliczane jest 14 gór powyżej 8000 m. n.p.m. Na koncie Piotra Pustelnika znajduje się już 13 ośmiotysięczników, brakuje mu tylko Annapurny. Do tej pory zaledwie 13 osób weszło na wszystkie szczyty ośmiotysięczne.

Annapurna należy do niskich ośmiotysięczników, jednak jest zaliczana do jednych z najniebezpieczniejszych gór świata. Do 2005 roku zarejestrowano zaledwie 103 wejścia na wierzchołek główny i aż 56 przypadków śmierci. Masyw Annapurny jest bardzo rozległy i składa się z 6 dużych szczytów, czyli głównego wierzchołka i pięciu wysokich siedmiotysięczników. Jest pierwszym ośmiotysięcznikiem zdobytym przez człowieka – 3 czerwca 1950 roku zdobyli ją po ciężkiej walce Maurice Herzog i Louise Lachenal. Jeśli chodzi o polskie wejścia, do tej pory górę zdobyło 8 Polaków:

1987 – Artur Hajzer, Jerzy Kukuczka – pierwsze wejście zimowe,

1991 – Bogdan Stefko, Krzysztof Wielicki, Wanda Rutkiewicz, Ryszard Pawłowski, Mariusz Sprutta,

1996 – Andrzej Marciniak.

Wyprawy mBanku kilka razy próbowały już osiągnąć wierzchołek. Dwukrotnie drogą Boningtona na południowej ścianie w roku 2004 i 2005. W roku 2006 wyprawa Tryptyk Himalajski w składzie Piotr Pustelnik, Peter Hamor (Słowacja), Piotr Morawski oraz Don Bowie (USA) jako cel obrała wschodnią grań, do tej pory zdobytą zaledwie dwukrotnie. Peter Hamor osiągnął wierzchołek główny 21 maja, Piotr Pustelnik i Piotr Morawski dotarli do wierzchołka wschodniego (8010 m n.p.m.). Zawrócili niosąc pomoc Tybetańczykowi, który dostał ślepoty śnieżnej.

W tym roku Piotr Pustelnik postanowił wrócić pod Annapurnę w wypróbowanym składzie – Piotr Pustelnik jako kierownik, Peter Hamor, Piotr Morawski i Dariusz Załuski, który będzie też pełnił funkcję filmowca. Jako cel została obrana droga czeska (lub zwana drogą Gabbarrova) na północno-zachodniej ścianie. Droga ta została pokonana pierwszy i jedyny raz przez zespół Nežerka/Martiš w 1988 roku. Dobry, wypróbowany skład oraz logiczna i bezpieczna linia zwiększają szansę na sukces.

Północno-zachodnia ściana Annapurny i droga Gabbarrova (droga czeska) wraz z miejscami potencjalnych obozów (C1, C2, C3)

W ramach aklimatyzacji przed tak poważnym wyzwaniem została wybrana góra Ama Dablam – jeden z najbardziej charakterystycznych szczytów w rejonie Mt. Everestu o wysokości 6812 m n.p.m. Wysokość tej góry oraz stosunkowa łatwość osiągnięcia wierzchołka dają szansę na naprawdę dobrą aklimatyzację.

Wyprawa rusza 15 marca z Warszawy. Do połowy kwietnia będzie trwała część aklimatyzacyjna na Ama Dablam. Następnie uczestnicy helikopterem przelecą do bazy pod północną ścianą Annapurny. Powrót planowany jest na 7 maja.
