Adam Mickiewicz Institute invites you to a meeting: people from the world of culture and Himalayan mountaineering.

The Himalayas are more than just the geography. They belong to the culture and the correlation between mountains and art are something prominently present  in Polish culture – in music, literature, film, poetry and paintings.

Throughout almost two decades Himalayan mountaineering was our specialty. In the new narration, which we are willing to present to our international community, it is not merely an extreme sport – it is an embodiment of Polish national virtues. The story of our mountains is a ballad praising freedom, perseverance, persistence, courage and solidarity and, last but not the least, imagination that allows one to achieve what seemed impossible. Thirty years ago Krzysztof Wielicki and Leszek Cichy were the first people to cross the summit of Everest during winter. Among Polish Everest conquerors were many people influential to culture, artists, dissidents – individuals of a notable creativity who refused to comply with the system. This cannot occur out of a pure accident. Our achievements in Himalayan mountaineering are tremendous and those who achieved them have been and still are part of our  intellectual elite: artists, scientists, intellectuals, opposition activists. List of those who created a legend of polish Himalayan mountaineering, at the same time forming the shape the Country, is indeed impressive.

Adam Mickiewicz Institute, whose intention is to recollect the links between people from the world of culture and Himalayan mountaineering, proudly invites you to a meeting with Janusz Onyszkiewicz, Krzysztof Wielicki, Jacek Jezierski, Andrzej Paczkowski and Michał Jagiełło, which is scheduled take place at Teatr Wspolczesny , 16 Mokotowska St. on February 15 at 11.15 AM.

Panel discussion for which we cordially invite you is the part of a larger project presenting contribution of great Poles in mountain culture, which includes a documentary film, a book with unique photographs and also a comic book commemorating first the first ascent of the Everest in a winter season. Our partners are Museo Nazionale della Montagna in Torino, Agora, National Centre of Culture and Jerzy Kukuczka Foundation.
