He started to climb in 1996, and winter climbing quickly became his passion. The first high mountaineering expedition he took a part in – to Chan Tengri (6995 metres), a mountain on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan – was organized by the Warsaw Mountaineering Club in 2001. Yet his career in the highest mountains began with a winter K2 (8611 metres) expedition in 2002/2003. He went there as a greenhorn, but did well setting up Camp IV at 7650 metres with Denis Urubko. So far it is the highest point ever reached in winter on that second highest mountain in the world.
Over the next two years he took part in two winter expeditions to Shisha Pangma with Simone Moro – his partner and teacher. This cooperation gave him lots of experience, and in 2003/2004 this resulted in the first ascent of the South face of Shisha Pangma. A year later they summitted the mountain for the first time ever in the winter season. That was a great achievement and a continuation of the Polish Himalayan tradition. It is worth mentioning here that until now only 7 out of the 14 eight-thousanders were summitted in winter, and all by Polish climbers. Krzysztof Wielicki summitted Lhotse on New Year’s Eve of 1987 and since then none of the other giants has been climbed successfully  in the winter season. Shisha Pangma was summitted as the eighth eight-thousanders after a gap of 17 years.
His high mountaineering skills developed rapidly over the next few years. It was during the Himalayan Trilogy in 2006, organised by his other teacher Piotr Pustelnik, that Piotr met Peter Hamor from Slovakia. They have been a perfect team ever since. Their aims in the highest mountains are getting increasingly more ambitious as they try to climb unpopular or brand new routes. One of them was the traverse of Gasherbrum I (8068 metres) in pure alpine style which was the first repetition of the Spanish and American route, and the first ever ascent in that style. They have many ambitious plans for the coming years.

Overall he has summitted six eight-thousanders so far. More information about the expeditions can be found in the Expedition part of his website, with some details also at the bottom of  his page. For his sport achievements he has been given awards many times in Poland and abroad. His sports and climbing dreams have become reality thanks to Alpinus, with which he has been cooperating since 2007. He runs, cycles and takes part in marathons.

Photography is his second passion. He drags bulky cameras with him even to the summits of eight-thousanders and the fruits of his efforts can be seen in the Mountain Photography part of this site. He also gives slideshows at various mountain festivals, meetings and corporate get-togethers. His articles and photos have been published in a range of mountaineering, adventure as well as other unrelated magazines. For the last two years he has used only digital photography but previously he used to make slides. His collection includes unique photos from mountains and other places hardly ever seen by others.

Travelling the world was among his interests even before he started climbing and some of his journeys are described in more details in Travels. While on scholarship at Durban University, he had a chance to visit a part of South Africa. Due to climbing, his current interests are concentrating on Asia and Nepal, Pakistan and Tibet in particular. However, he hasn’t given up the Old Continent yet.

He works at the Physical Chemistry Division at Warsaw University of Technology as his PhD thesis examined “The influence of the shape, size and polarity of molecules on phase equilibria. The influence of the high pressure up to 1.5 GPa.” He is still interested in thermodynamics, phase equlibria, mathematics and informatics. Zaczął wspinać się w 1996 roku i szybko jego pasją stało się wspinanie zimowe. W 2001 roku po raz  pierwszy pojechał na wyprawę w góry wysokie razem z członkami Klubu Wysokogórskiego w Warszawie. Ich celem był Chan Tengri na granicy Kirgizji i Kazachstanu o wysokości 6995 m n.p.m. Momentem przełomowym było uczestnictwo w wyprawie zimowej Netia K2 (8611) na przełomie 2002 i 2003 roku. Pojechał na nią z “ławki rezerwowych” i wykorzystał swoją szansę. Wraz z Denisem Urubko założył obóz IV na wysokości 7650 mnpm. Jest to do tej pory najwyższy punkt do którego dotarł człowiek zimą na tej drugiej co do wysokości górze świata.
Kolejne dwa lata to zimowe wyprawy na Shisha Pangma (8027). Jego partnerem i nauczycielem stał się Simone Moro. Współpraca zaowocowała doświadczeniem, a także pierwszym przejściem południowej ściany Shisha Pangmy w zimie na przełomie roku 2003/2004. Rok później jako pierwsi ludzie zimą pokonali ten czternasty ośmiotysięcznik. Wspaniałe nawiązanie do tradycji polskiego himalaizmu. Warto przypomnieć, że do tamtego momentu na 14 ośmiotysięczników tylko 7 zostało zdobytych zimą i wszystkie przez Polaków. Krzysztof Wielicki stanał na szczycie Lhotse w noc sylwestrową 1987 roku i od tamtej pory żaden z pozostałych gigantów nie został pokonany. Jako ósmy padła Shisha Pangma, zdobyta także przez Polaka, po 17 latach przerwy.
Kolejne lata to gwałtowny rozwój w górach wysokich. Podczas Tryptyku Himalajskiego organizowanego przez kolejnego nauczyciela, Piotra Pustelnika, w 2006 roku poznał Petera Hamora ze Słowacji, z którym do tej pory stanowią zgrany zespół. Ich celem są coraz ambitniejsze przejścia w górach najwyższych. Starają się wybierać drogi jak najmniej uczęszczane lub próbują nowych dróg. Efektem tego jest chociażby przejście trawersu Gasherbruma I (8068) w czystym stylu alpejskim, co było pierwszym powtórzeniem tego wyczynu i pierwszym przejściem drogi hiszpańskiej w połączeniu z amerykańską w tym stylu. Na następne lata opracowywane są kolejne, coraz bardziej ambitne plany.

Do tej pory zdobył 6 ośmiotysięczników. Więcej na temat wypraw znajduje się w dziale Wyprawy, a szczegółowe zestawienie osiągnięć na dole niniejszej strony. Wielokrotnie nagradzany za osiągnięcia sportowe w kraju i zagranicą. Od 2007 roku współpracuje z firmą Alpinus, dzięki której jego marzenia górskie i sportowe stały się rzeczywistością. W ramach treningów biega i jeździ na rowerze, a od kilku lat regularnie startuje w maratonach.

Jego drugą pasją stała się fotografia. Taszczy ze sobą nawet na szczyty ośmiotysięczników aparat, często z obiektywami (które zapewnia firma Sigma). Efektem są zdjęcia (dział Fotografia górska), a także liczne pokazy slajdów oraz diaporamy na festiwalach górskich, podróżniczych, spotkaniach i firmowych imprezach integracyjnych. Jego artykuły wraz ze zdjęciami ukazywały się w wielu czasopismach o tematyce górskiej i podróżniczej, a także w czasopismach niebranżowych. Od dwóch lat zajmuje się całkowicie fotografią cyfrową, wcześniej zdjęcia z wypraw i podróży uwieczniał na slajdach. W jego kolekcji można znaleźć unikalne zdjęcia z gór i miejsc, które rzadko lub w ogóle dotknęła stopa ludzka.

Jeszcze przed wspinaniem złapał bakcyla podróżowania i poznawania świata. O niektórych podróżach po różnych kontynentach można poczytać w dziale Podróże. Dzięki stażowi na uniwersytecie w Durbanie zwiedził kawałek południowej Afryki. Ostatnio, siłą rzeczy, jego głównym zainteresowaniem cieszy się Azja, a szczególnie Nepal, Pakistan i Tybet. Ale nie zaniedbuje też Starego Kontynentu.

Na co dzień pracował na Wydziale Chemicznym Politechniki Warszawskiej, w Zakładzie Chemii Fizycznej jako adiunkt. Na początku 2005 roku obronił pracę doktorską zatytułowaną: “Wpływ kształtu, wielkości i polarności cząsteczek na równowagi fazowe. Wpływ wysokiego ciśnienia do 1.5 GPa”. Nadal w kręgu jego zainteresowania jest termodynamika, równowagi fazowe, matematyka i informatyka. Zestawienie publikacji i prezentacji konferencyjnych można znaleźć tutaj.

Od 2007 roku pełnił funkcję wiceprezesa Polskiego Związku Alpinizmu.
